Understand your refund status

When you submit your tax return, it will go through several steps of processing. Each return is different. A simple return will process faster, but returns requesting certain credits that are an attractive target for fraud will likely require additional review by one or more department-review systems.

Select the type of refund status message you received for an explanation of your return and refund status.

When your refund status changes, the message will automatically update in our automated phone system, our online Check Your Refund Status tool, and the account information available to our Call Center representatives.

Requires further review

Status

We received your return and it requires further review. This may result in your New York State return taking longer to process than your federal return. No further information is available at this time.

Explanation

Our automated processing system scans every return for errors and signs of fraud. Depending on the result of your return's scan, we may need to manually review it.

Your return may remain in this stage for an extended period of time to allow us to review.

This status may update to processing again, or you may receive a request for additional information.

Request for information

Status

We sent you a letter requesting additional information. You should receive the letter within 2 weeks. To respond to your letter quickly and easily online—and to review our checklists for a complete response—select Help in the upper-right corner of this page.

Explanation

If you receive this status, we need more information from you before we can finish processing your return and refund. You will receive a Request for Information letter (Form DTF-948 or DTF-948-O) with details about the information we need and how to respond to the letter.

You can view the letter we mailed in your Individual Online Services account, using our Respond to Department Notice application. You don't need to wait for the mailed letter to respond. See Respond to a letter requesting additional information to learn more.
